About 500 cyclists enthusiastically participated in the inauguration of the new bicycle path in Cartago today. The inauguration act was attended, amongst others, by the mayor of Cartago Rolando Rodríguez, the national minister of health Daisy Corrales, the Dutch embassador to Costa Rica Mette Gonggrijp, and the bishop of Cartago Monseñor Francisco Ulloa.
The construction of the bicycle path was financed by the Automobile Club of Costa Rica and their parent organization FIA, promoting safer streets for all to share. A Foundation supports the construction and use of infrastructure for non-motorized transport in the urban centers of Costa Rica's Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) as well as an improved public transport connection between the different urban centers of the polycentric network system.
In the case of Cartago, historic capital of Costa Rica and nowadays one of the four main cities within the GAM, A Foundation formed a strategic alliance to promote the use and improve the physical infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians in collaboration with FIA, the Municipality of Cartago, as well as different actors of academia and the civil society.
