Rio+20 High-level Dialogue Berlin

17.06.2013

A 01 will participate in the High-level Dialogue on Implementing Rio+20 Decisions on Sustainable Cities and Transport.

Rio+20 recognized the urgency of addressing the trends and challenges of urbanization, in particular in developing countries, including rapid private motorization, traffic congestion, inefficient fuel use, and air pollution. Rio+20 called upon governments to “support the development of sustainable transport systems, including energy efficient multi-modal transport systems, notably public mass transportation systems, clean fuels and vehicles, as well as improved transportation systems in rural areas” (§133). Rio+20 also emphasized “the important role of municipal governments in setting a vision for sustainable cities, from the initiation of city planning through to revitalization of older cities and neighborhoods” (§136).

The conference will take place from June 19-21 on the EUREF-Campus, which is built around the iconic “Gasometer” in Berlin-Schöneberg. It is organized by the German Innovation Center for Mobility and Societal Change (InnoZ) in collaboration with the Umwelt Bundesamt, the Global Forum on Human Settlements, Local Governments for Sustainability, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the European Institute for Sustainable Transport (Eurist), the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Foundation for Social Change Partnership on Sustainable Low-Carbon Transport (SloCat).

A 01 was invited regarding their expertise on sustainable urban design projects, participatory planning processes, as well as their specific efforts on implementing non-motorized transport culture and infrastructure in Central America.
