Sustainable Cities > World Urban Forum

27.08.2012

A Foundation will present its research project Sustainable Cities at the World Urban Forum (WUF) in Naples, Italy on September 03. The WUF is organized biennially by UN-HABITAT, the theme for this year's meeting is The Urban Future.

Sustainability, one of the most widely used and maybe least commonly understood terms, is open to interpretation. Applied in the context of urban development, we asked a multidisciplinary cross section of international practitioners about their idea of what a sustainable city could be and what they think the impact of it is, potentially, on human development. Showcasing a selection of contemporary urban conditions and best practices worldwide, the contributions made in the course of this research create a pixelated image of an integral sustainable urban development in the steadily urbanizing society accommodated on our planet.

An encyclopedic catalogue of sustainable best practices from around the world is launched in collaboration with the Urban Matters project from Cordaid, the Netherlands. Edited by Oliver Schütte and Marije van Lidth de Jeude, the catalogue includes textual contributions by (in alphabetical order) Tatiana Bilbao, Katrin Bohn, Michael Braungart, Alfredo Brillembourg, Ricky Burdett, Carrot City, Earthscape, Alejandro Echeverri, Bradley L. Garrett, Juliet Kiguli, Hubert Klumpner, Omar Nagati, Margriet Nieuwenhuis, Jan Pronk, Mallika Sarabhai, Saskia Sassen, Stephen Tusingwire, André Viljoen, and Ma Yansong. Photography about the contemporary urban condition is presented by Tom Arban, Iwan Baan, Edgar Cleijne, Martha Cooper, Cordaid / Architecture for Humanity, Earthscape, Luis Gallardo, Bradley L. Garrett, Sergio Gómez, Dionisio González, Luis A. de Jesús, Yuri Kozyrev / NOOR, Marije van Lidth de Jeude, MAD Architects, Mazzanti Arquitectos, Michael Moran / OTTO, Fons Rademakers, Verónica Restrepo, Oliver Schütte, ShuHe, and Anna Wachtmeister.
