Waterdunen

A 01 has been commissioned to design a series of public space interventions for a large-scale infrastructure, tourism, and recreation project called Waterdunen. The target site is located in Zeeland, the westernmost province of the Netherlands. The area is characterized as a “land within the sea”, pinpointing its continuous struggle against and coexistence with the ocean.

In a private public partnership model for investment, led by the Province of Zeeland, the project combines the reinforcement of the Dutch coastline with the development of a bird watching area and integrated bird watching hides as well as a hotel, a bungalow park and camping facilities. Set to become a main tourist destination, a total of 250 hectares of freely accessible nature are influenced by a controlled tide. The tidal culvert's aim is to develop, in a natural way, a varied landscape of mud flats, salt marshes and gullies.

The work is based on an integral approach to promote sustainable tourism in the Netherlands with a focus on local products and identity; it is executed in collaboration with experience design office MMEK' and our partners from XCOOP. The interventions are based on a masterplan developed by Dutch engineering firm Royal Haskoning DHV and landscape designer Jeroen de Jong; the image attached to this message is taken from a promotional video produced by MMEK'.

A 01 is experienced in the development of innovative tourism concepts, projects and research, such as Acupuncturas Monteverdes, Biosphere, I Guana and Recombinant Tourism.
